Project Brief
Expansive is a tech startup requesting discovery research and product development for a digital tool to support families with neurodiverse children.
Neurodiverse children often struggle with organization, flexibility, transitioning from one activity to another, future forecasting, time blindness, and many child specific issues. The owners of Expansive are parents of a young child on the spectrum. As product designers, they believe a digital device can probably ameliorate some of the daily issues that arise while raising a child on the spectrum in a family with diverse needs.

Problem
Initial Research
African American youth and young adults feel emotionally unsupported in school and by the current mental health system. How do we provide them with culturally competent information and culturally compe support.

01
Cultural Stigma
-
Seeking mental health support is considered taboo within the African American community.
-
Physical care is considered a higher priority than mental health care.

02
Cultural Competency
-
The presentation of mental health can appear different than European prioritized academic models.
-
The majority of therapists are white and may not understand how to detect or treat African American youth.
-
Due to previous experiences with medical research and testing, there is a valid mistrust of the medical industry in African American communities.

03
Solution
A mobile app that provides African American youth with culturally competent mental health support to prevent and detect depression and suicide ideation.
